Square Enix and Platinum Games are teaming up to make a third-person action-RPG follow-up to the 2010 hit, NieR.

An untitled NieR game has been unveiled by Square Enix during E3 2015, and while we're surprised to see it happen, we're definitely glad it's here. With Platinum Games in the mix (known for their work on the Bayonetta series), you'd best believe that there will be some excellent third-person action mechanics added to this RPG. This new NieR will feature three protagonists, including the girl featured in the provided E3 trailer. You can expect the same kind of world and terminology but entirely new locations. Unfortunately, this game is said to feature very little connection to the original title. You might see a couple of quick appearances and cameos, but expect a new experience overall.

Returning to direct of this project will be Yoko Taro. Producing it will be Yosuke Saito, known for producing the first game and Dragon Quest X. Also returning is composer Keiichi Okabe. New roster additions include character designer Akihiko Yoshida (Bravely Default and the Final Fantasy series) and designer Takahisa Taura (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance).

While no launch window has been set (we guestimate late 2016 or 2017), this new NieR title will be hitting the PlayStation 4.
