Earlier this week, Rockstar unveiled a series of new Grant Theft Auto V screenshots that look more like paintings or widescreen photographs than in-game footage. This has led some fans to speculate that the screenshots were made on a PS4 or the Xbox Durango. Others speculated that they were made using a PC version of the game running on top of the line graphics hardware. However, it turns out that neither of these theories are true.

Rockstar clarified on its official blog today that the screenshots actually come from the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. The team was able to squeeze out an incredible amount of graphical performance from current generation hardware and has created the biggest and most detailed Grand Theft Auto world yet.

Grand Theft Auto V has currently only been officially confirmed for the Xbox 360 and PS3, however rumors have been circulating about next generation versions of the game for several months now. In addition, fans have started a petition to get Rockstar to port the game to PCs. So perhaps this was just a case of big wishes and hopeful dreams, but look at it this way. If the game looks this good on current generation hardware, it will look absolutely mind blowing on next generation hardware if it does get ported.
