Nas Getting Ill Original Series on Xbox

Believe it or not, famed rapper Nas is in negotiations to develop an original series with Xbox Entertainment Studios, which will be based on his life growing up in the rap game in the ’90s.

According to Deadline, the series, dubbed ‘Street Dreams,’ is being put together by Jamie Patricof and Lynette Howell’s Electric City Entertainment, which previously produced ‘The Place Beyond the Pines.’ Set in Long Island’s Queensbridge neighborhood, ‘Street Dreams’ will examine the life and times of family and rap music in the 1990s. The half-hour series is being written and directed by Jonathan Levine (‘The Wackness’), who has some experience telling tales about New York City in the 90s. As for Nas’ involvement, the man behind ‘Illmatic’ will be writing a composing the music for ‘Street Dreams.’

There’s no telling just how autobiographical ‘Street Dreams’ will be, but there will undoubtedly be some strong influence from Nas in the overall narrative. Along with ‘Street Dreams,’ Xbox Entertainment Studios is working on a live-action ‘Halo’ series with Steven Spielberg and Neil Blomkamp. Few other shows have been confirmed for production, but there will be some original documentaries developed exclusively for Xbox consoles, too.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Nas’ seminal album, ‘Illmatic.’ To commemorate the landmark, Nas will hold a concert at the Kennedy Center as part of the One Mic: Hip-Hop Culture Worldwide celebration. We’re glad to see such diverse programming is in store for the Xbox consoles, and can only hope that the series will find an audience and some success in such limited release.
