As reported by Polygon, Nintendo's Miiverse is hitting smartphones and web browsers next month or May, and a Nintendo 3DS version is also set for a future date.

Miiverse producer Kiyoshi Mizuki announced at the Game Developers Conference that the interface will provide such basic Miiverse functions like posting comments, doodling, and viewing and interacting with different communities.

Although news of a 3DS version of Miiverse is encouraging, Mizuki added that certain games and apps featured on the handheld will not be compatible with Miiverse. Seen as the backbone of Nintendo's social network, Miiverse had a concurrent launch with last November's debut of the Nintendo Wii U.

Earlier this month, Nintendo released a Miiverse update which enabled users to select which gamers can actually respond to their posts.

With flagging sales of the Nintendo Wii U, it will be interesting to see if Miiverse's expansion will reignite interest in the console.
