Key components that make up the Oculus Rift developer kit are in short supply, resulting in temporary suspended sales.

Gamespot reported that the Oculus VR, Inc.'s Reddit featured official postings from Oculus VR representatives that the company would be pulling the plug on producing anymore Oculus Rift developer kits for the time being. “Certain components used in the Oculus Rift developer kit are no longer being manufactured, meaning they are no longer available to us for production," Oculus VR's community manager, Andres Hernandez said.

This means that Oculus VR no longer has the materials required to produce any more development kits and will have to find replacements for the essential pieces in order to continue selling more kits down the line. Hernandez stated that Oculus VR has already shipped over 50,000 development kits of the anticipated VR headset.

Given that each developer kit only cost around $300, it makes sense that this breakthrough in VR technology would sell so successfully, even in the development stage. Unfortunately, no one at Oculus VR has yet to comment on whether or not this will push back the consumer release of Oculus Rift.
