Kickstarter of the Week: Glyph the Mobile Personal Theater

Avegant

We have featured virtual reality devices quite a bit here on Kickstarter of the Week, but one of the biggest problems this this tech is that you still have to be tied to your chair. No matter how awesome running around a dynamic virtual world is with an Oculus Rift headset on, you are still sitting in front of your computer. Luckily, our latest Kickstarter of the Week, the Avegant Glyph, doesn’t have that problem. It allows you to take all your virtual reality media on the road with only the small downside of looking like Geordi LaForge with earmuffs on.

Unlike a lot of other personal VR devices, the Avegant Glyph isn’t primarily being made for gaming. Instead, it’s being marketed as a media device based around “personal display technology.” The Glyph utilizes a virtual retina display which projects images directly onto your eyes retinas. The display is actually stored in the headband of what looks like a normal pair of headphones. While on the go, you can easily flip the headband up and listen to music, or flip it down and watch your favorite movies and shows.

The Glyph is also universal, operating off a simple HDMI input. That means you can basically hook it up to anything you want. Cable box at home? Sure. iPhone or Droid? Why not? Mac or PC? Still not a problem. The glyph actually works particularly well with video games. It comes with a built in head tracker, just like the Oculus Rift. So hook the HDMI to your PS4 or Xbox One and have Call of Duty literally beamed right into your eyeballs. Maybe just hook it up to your mobile phone to have a crazy Real Racing experience on the bus. Just don’t be that guy that uses a virtual reality headset to play Candy Crush. That’s just weird.

However, the Glyph is being designed for more than just personal use. The Kickstarter makes mention of 360 degree Hollywood movies which would allow you to look around the environment as you wish, as a sort of living camera. Art installations could use the Glyph to allow several audience members to watch the same performance from different angles. Camera integration is also a possibility, allowing for not only VR functions, but augmented reality functions as well.

The Glyph reached its Kickstarter goal of $250,000 incredibly fast, in less than four hours actually. As of today, it has raised over $730,000 with 24 days to go. Unfortunately, if you want to get in on the ground floor of Glyph technology, you will have to shell out a pretty penny. The lowest levels of donation do not even net you a Glyph for your own personal use. Five dollars gets you a thank you, twenty five dollars gets you a Frisbee, and 50 dollars gets you a bag of coffee. You’ll have to pledge at least five hundred dollars in order to receive a glyph beta unit, which is pretty steep. However, if you have money to burn you can get even more, including a trip to Avegant HQ for the full product experience at $2000. So head on over to the official Glyph Kickstarter page and invest in the future of beaming movies directly onto your retinas.
