Kickstarter funds more than just gaming projects. The powerful crowd funding platform can also fund gaming events. This is the case with Gaymer X2, a LGBT-friendly gaming convention that got its start last year. Gaymer X2 is the second annual Gaymer convention, and looked for $10,000 in funding to make it a reality. In a few short days, the project managed to raise just about $15,000 of funding, and with 28 days left, the project only stands to better its position.

Last year, over 2,300 gamers attended the first Gaymer X convention. The convention looks at the gaming community through the lens of the LGBT community, but anyone of any sexual orientation is welcome to attend. The convention will feature panels, tournaments, cosplay competitions, and more. Special guests, or “Bosses of Honor,” will be in attendance and will be signing autographs as well as doing panels. These bosses include David Gaider, lead writer of the Dragon Age series, Jaimie Woo, author of Meet Grindr and co-founder of Gamercamp, Mattie Brice, author of Borderhouse, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, Gordon Bellamy of IGDA, Zach Weiner of SMBC Comics fame, Sci-Fi author John Scalzi and openly gay WWE superstar Darren Young. There will also be a Saturday night concert featuring the musical stylings of Virt, Aethernaut and 2Mello.

Rewards for donating to Gaymer X2 are quite interesting. At $70, you can nab yourself a badge to attend the convention at the InterContinental in San Francisco. Going above that, you can get rewards like booth space, exclusive lunches with guests, and even swanky hotel rooms. There are also a whole bunch of stretch goals, including additional tournaments, cosplay contests, concerts, TwitchTV streams and more.

Gaymer X2 may not be the convention for you. Heck, you may not even be interested in the queer community or gay rights, and that’s your prerogative. But it’s hard to deny that Gaymer X2 is important. It reminds us that gaming is not an exclusive club. It’s not something exclusive to the realm of 20 something shooter fans playing Call of Duty. It’s a thing that everyone, all of the human race, can enjoy. Whether you are gay, straight, white, black, male, female, trans, casual, hardcore or somewhere in the middle (or even one of those weird guys (like me) who imports visual novels from Japan), gaming is a pastime that belongs to all of us, and Gaymer X2 is a symbol of that. If you agree, consider heading over to the official Kickstarter page and throwing them a couple bucks. Even a simple $3 donation will get you mentioned on the official Gaymer X website.
