After three years of purchase-to-play, massively multiplayer online role-playing game goodness, ArenaNet has unveiled the first official expansion to Guild Wars 2.

A little less than two weeks ago, ArenaNet teased that an expansion to its subscription-less MMORPG, Guild Wars 2, was on the way. At its "Guild Wars 2: Beyond the Point of No Return" PAX South panel, ArenaNet officially revealed this expansion as Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thrones, Polygon reports. This teaser came from Season 2 of Guild Wars 2's Living World content, which hinted at a big announcement being made by ArenaNet at PAX South. Heart of Thorns will continue the grand hunt for Mordremoth. Now, the big bad dragon is hiding deep within the Maguuma jungle, and you must get your 'Apocalypse Now' / 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' on by continuing the hunt.

There are new classes, enemies and weapon types being added into this expansion. A new progression system pertaining to the Maguuma environment, called Masteries, will be implemented as well. These Mastery bonuses will be unlocked via story progression and challenge completion, and will be applied account-wide after they are unlocked, which removes a LOT of the grind players would have had to do for their characters. A flying mount-like method of travel is one of these new Mastery bonuses.

Unfortunately, there is no launch window attached to this big project. With Warlords of Draenor rekindling many World of Warcraft accounts and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn's Heavensward expansion on the way, ArenaNet can take its time to get Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns just right.
