Yesterday, we got our first look at one of the pre-rendered backgrounds in Torment: Tides of Numenera. Today, we get to see that screenshot in a whole new light. Get it? That’s a pun.

InXile Entertainment has released a video showing off how the lighting engine of Torment: Tides of Numenera will work. While the backgrounds themselves will be pre-rendered, the Unity engine will be able to dynamically light your surroundings as you run through them. Characters will cast shadows, as will other aspects of the environment. Characters will also be rendered in full 3D allowing them to move and interact with the environment in numerous ways.

As you’ll notice in the video, the engine is capable of producing numerous discrete sources of light, all interacting with each other at once. Right now, this is the only test we have available to us, but the Torment team assures us that they will the engine to the best of its ability.

Torment: Tides of Numenera has raised nearly $3.35 million so far and there are still 3 days left. If they manage to reach their $4 million stretch goal, they will become the most funded video game on Kickstarter.
