Consoles these days do far more than just play video games. The PS3 alone already supports Hulu, Netflix, Crunchyroll, and much more. Now, Epix, a premium cable channel service, will be joining the PlayStation family.

According to GameSpot, the Epix app will only be available to existing Epix customers an cannot be purchased independently. Instead, an authentication code from an Epix provider is required to activate the app in the first place. There is one exception, however. PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to stream one movie for free from Epix, each month regardless of whether or not they are an Epic subscriber.

Anyone who is interested in giving the service a try can take part in a 14 day free trial. An Epix app for the PlayStation Vita is expected to come out soon as well.

Epix originally launched on consoles via the Xbox 360 in December of 2011. Epix apps are available on Android and iOS platforms, as well as Google TV and Roku.
