When Battlefield 4 was revealed at the EA press conference this year, we got to see 64 players all join the battle at once up on stage. Our first reaction? “That has to be smoke and mirrors.” We were incredibly skeptical that 64 player matches on a scale that big would actually work. Lucky for us, Battlefield 4 was playable on the show floor, which made it very easy to kick our skepticism to the curb…. after shooting it with a mortar.
What do you think is the most successful game franchise in existence? Call of Duty? Nope. Mario? Still wrong. Give up? The answer is Skylanders, one of the most absurdly successful money making games ever to come out of Activision. This year, at E3 2013, we got a chance to take a look at the newest Skylanders game, Skylanders: Swap Force, and picked up a limited edition E3 run Hot Dog Skylanders figure by doing so. We are all now 300 dollars richer after pawning off this figure on eBay, but how did the game hold up?
Fighting games were in short supply at E3 2013. Luckily, one fighting game was badass enough to represent the entire fighting game community and then some. That game is Divekick, the one true fighting game, and a release that you should be looking forward to in the near future.
The new video game releases for July 2013 are looking pretty threadbare. With The Last of Us rounding out the big blockbuster releases for awhile, we're left with a month where another Dynasty Warriors is the highlight
The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) can be a maddening and soul deadening experience, thanks to the sea of media, gamers, and industry folk who inhabit the Los Angeles Convention Center. Being a middle-aged gamer who still yearns for his Atari days, I prefer quiet sit downs with developers and publicity reps as they discuss their latest offerings. With that in mind, I was more than happy to check out The Walking Dead: 400 Days, the highly anticipated downloadable content from the The Walking Dead: Season One.
Bringing up the ethical dilemmas in the midst of a puzzle/platforming game is a tough accomplishment, but The Swapper does so in a manner that is unforgettable in its execution. A small group of Finnish independent developers, ironically named Facepalm Games, have created an experience that is on par with the recent side-scrolling classics that have boomed throughout the indie scene over the past few years, such as Super Meat Boy, Braid, and Limbo. The game also evokes a sense of exploration and re-exploration that reminds us of Castlevania and Metroid. So keep a clone handy and be ready to have your brain swapped, because today, we review The Swapper.
I think the graphics race has entered the last leg of its journey. With tech demos coming out for the new consoles and PC graphics cards, I can’t help but think that they’re only a tiny bit better than what we already have. This next generation seems to be an evolution in graphical quality rather than a revolution. But, I think another revolution is coming. Something has to change in order for gaming to survive and move on to the next level. This revolution won’t be in graphics, but in storytelling.
PC Gamers have long espoused their superiority. But do they have the catalog of games to fill up a list of the Best PC Games of 2013? After the first few months of of this year, they certainly have some brilliant new additions to their roster of graphics screaming digital entertainment
