King, creators of Candy Crush Saga, has just dropped its application for the trademark to "Candy" in the US.

According to Kotaku, the company withdrew the application on Feb. 24, 2014. King filed for a trademark on the word "Candy" in 2013, which it said was to protect the company's intellectual property.

Kotaku reached out to King and received the following statement from a spokesperson:

King has withdrawn its trademark application for Candy in the U.S., which we applied for in February 2013 before we acquired the early rights to Candy Crusher. Each market that King operates in is different with regard to IP. We feel that having the rights to Candy Crusher is the best option for protecting Candy Crush in the U.S. market. This does not affect our E.U. trademark for Candy and we continue to take all appropriate steps to protect our IP.

So at least for the companies in the US, the word "Candy" is still safe to use. The fate of the word in the EU market remains to be seen. We'll keep you updated as more information about King, and its attempts to trademark the word "Candy," is made available.
