    Limbo

    Playdead

Limbo may be one of the saddest games to never say a word. This simple shadow filled puzzle platformer had you in control of a little boy, lost in a world that wanted to kill him. Whether its giant spiders, horrible death machines, or other pranking tricksters, something out there wants you dead and you don’t know why. You struggle to find your way out of this maze like environment, only to find out that your fate may be darker than you ever imagined. It’s quite simply an amazing art piece and a fun puzzle platformer to boot.

    Bastion

    Supergiant Games

Speaking of art-pieces, Bastion has truly mastered the art of narration. This top down isometric RPG tells the story of the end of the world, starting at the end, going back to the beginning, and then trying to prevent the end again. There is a bit of time travel, a lot of fantasy, themes of racism and war, and much more to be discovered here, all while a gritty voiced narrator recounts the story. It’s one of the best action RPGs of the last generation and deserves a play by anyone looking for a good narrative.

    FEZ

    Polytron Corporation

One thing that indie games seem to get that AAA titles don’t is that the experience of a game rests just as much on its mechanics as its story. FEZ is a great example of this, as its dimension shifting mechanics play into every aspect of the game’s meta-narrative. But that’s not all. FEZ asks you to do more than just platform and shift dimensions. It also asks you to go into a first person perspective, solve cryptography puzzles, and even visit websites outside of the game. FEZ is a magnificent and immersive puzzle experience that pushes its story outside the boundaries of the game itself.

    The Walking Dead

    Telltale Games

Let’s just say this straight out. If you haven’t played TellTale’s The Walking Dead yet, stop reading this article and play it now. It doesn’t matter that we are almost to #1. It doesn’t matter if you are on your lunch break or if you are sitting at home in your underwear. Drop everything that you are doing and play this game now. The Walking Dead is one of the most gripping masterpieces of storytelling to come out of this or any generation. The game focuses on making tough choices during the zombie apocalypse. It makes you ask, “Who can I trust?” and makes you wonder whether you, yourself, are trustworthy. At times it will make you question your morals outside the game, wondering if you are actually a good person, or just a selfish person trying to appear good. (By the way, we were totally kidding, you should finish the list.)
