The 25 Best Video Game Crossovers was a fun list to make. Somewhere down the line, game companies decided to be less restrictive with their IPs and started throwing all of their properties together into gigantic multi-character fight fests. Some crossovers make sense, like the multitudes of fighting game crossovers out there. Others, not so much. Mario vs Final Fantasy in a basketball game? Hey, at least it's fun. These are the 25 Best Video Game Crossovers.

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem

    Atlus/Intelligent Systems

Our first entry on this list only takes the lowest slot because it hasn’t been released yet. Shin Megami Tensei, one of the darkest JRPG series of all time, and Fire Emblem, one of the most beloved tactical RPGs of all time, are getting a crossover on the Nintendo DS. The idea alone warrants it a spot on this list! Medieval sword masters slicing demons in half, what’s not to love?

    Fortune Street

    Square-Enix

Fortune Street is a combination of the Mario franchise and the Dragon Quest franchise. Even weirder, the game is a virtual board game, much like Mario Party. Still, despite its bizarre nature, the game is quite fun and it does the personalities of several famous Dragon Quest characters justice.

    Mario Hoops 3-on-3

    Square-Enix

Speaking of strange Mario crossovers, Mario Hoops 3-on-3 crosses over Mario, Donkey Kong, and Final Fantasy of all things. The big draw to this game was the strange, half anime, half cartoon drawings of the Final Fantasy characters. It really gave them a personality on the court we just never saw before.

    Mortal Kombat’s Crossovers

    Midway/Netherrealm Studios

Mortal Kombat has had a number of different crossovers in the past. Their biggest was obviously Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, but that game wasn’t that good so most people tend to ignore it. The recent crossovers in Mortal Kombat 9 are way better. Who doesn’t like seeing Freddy Krueger lock his opponents in a furnace?

    Aliens vs Predator

    SEGA

Granted, Alien vs Predator isn’t just a crossover in gaming. It’s been done in movies and novels and all sorts of different media. That’s what makes it so good! This is the type of campy horror movie awesomeness that transcends the medium it was created in. Frankly, we will come back to the battle of space nasties no matter what console it’s put on. Here’s hoping we get one for the PS4.

    Warriors Orochi

    Koei/Omega Force

After a while, people started to notice that the “Warriors” games were pretty similar to each other. Just mash the buttons a lot and kill hundreds of mindless peons. Luckily, the Warriors team noticed this as well and decided to combine Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors, and even that weird Warriors of Troy spinoff to create Warriors Orochi. Lu Bu vs Date Masamune? Why not.

    Capcom vs SNK 2

    Capcom

By reading this list, you’ll quickly learn that Capcom likes to cross over its properties with everything. Capcom vs SNK 2 is a great example of this, as Capcom crossed over with its long time fighting game rival SNK in one of the first examples of opposing companies coming together to create one gigantic crossover fighting fest. CVS2 was one of the biggest fighting games of the early '00s, right before the big fighting game slump hit. To this day it is still one of the most loved fighting games in existence and many are hoping for some sort of HD remake to hit digital distribution services worldwide.

    Jump Ultimate Stars

    Ganbarion

Shonen Jump is the magazine that all of your favorite animes started in. Dragon Ball Z? Started in Shonen Jump. Bleach? Started in Shonen Jump. One Piece, Death Note, Yu-Gi-Oh, Gintama, Prince of Tennis, Black Cat, Fist of the North Star, Saint Seiya, Yu Yu Hakusho, and JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure? All of them got their start in Shonen Jump. Jump Ultimate Stars for the DS lets you put all of your favorite iconic anime characters together in one gigantic battle royale. It never came out in America, but thanks to the DS being region free, it’s still one of the most well known crossovers out there.

    Tatsunoko vs Capcom

    Capcom

Speaking of games that never came to America… sort of. Tatsunoko vs Capcom put Tatsunoko’s famous anime leads up against the many and varied characters of Capcom fighting games (we told you Capcom lies to cross over with everything.) Originally, this game wasn’t slated for American release because Tatsunoko’s properties were held by several different localization companies. But fan demand was so high and the import/piracy rate for this game was so phenomenal that Capcom eventually brought it over to the States with some brand new characters. If it weren’t for this game, Zero and Frank West may have never made it into Marvel vs Capcom 3.

    Pokemon Conquest

    Tecmo Koei

Pokemon Conquest is a combination of Pokemon and Nobunaga’s Ambition, a JRPG series that takes place in a fantasy land of samurai loosely based on Japanese history. So yes, this means that the game essentially features samurai having Pokemon battles. What can be cooler than that?
