    Another World - 20th Anniversary

    Bulkypix

When it was first released, Another World was a groundbreaking game that pushed the boundaries of what was possible through digital storytelling. The graphics back then were amazing and the revamped version in the 20th Anniversary game does not disappoint. The razor sharp visuals only serve to enhance the original game and really make you believe that there is another world. The animations are buttery smooth and the level of difficulty remains just as hard as it was twenty years ago. Another World does what a good adventure game should, which is take you on an adventure on another world.

    Anomaly 2

    Chillingo

The first Anomaly was a great game, but its sequel is even better. Incredible graphics, an engaging storyline and kick ass audio make for a fantastic alien invasion experience. It might be simple touch and tap maneuvering, but the ways you can go about beating each level make for some of the most challenging, and rewarding, experiences you'll have on your iPad.

    Machinarium

    Amanita Design

Machinarium is the closest that you'll ever get to point and click adventure game perfection. All of its ingredients add up to something that transcends its whole. The visuals are simply stunning. They look like they're painted in rusty watercolors on the screen. Its story doesn't use any words to communicate what it needs, instead it relies on simple pictures, animations, and character gestures to move you along emotionally and physically. Dead Space

    Electronic Arts

If anyone ever tells you that your iPhone is no match for that big brick of a console under a TV, just say "Dead Space." Dead Space is one of the few examples of a mainstream current-gen console game brought over to iOS. With revamped controls and graphics, Dead Space is a masterpiece of mobile survival horror. The controls are quick and fluid. The quick time events that have you tapping and swiping for your life feel visceral and desperate. The story is a simple one of survival, but the stakes feel even higher now that you're playing from bed with all the lights off and your iPad against your nose.

    Walking Dead: The Game

    TellTale Games

Telltale Games have turned their deft storytelling hand to the Walking Dead. The Walking Dead game is a fantastically told episodic series meant to compliment the already revered comics and TV show. Telltale games have a certain cartoony look to them, but here they've understandably gone for a bit more of a creepy look. Even if you're suffering from zombie fatigue, Walking Dead: The Game for iOS is well worth a play.

    Angry Birds Rio

    Rovio

Angry Birds Rio dodges all the problems of a movie tie-in game and rises above the competitors with a game that stays true to both the original game and the film. Angry Birds Rio supplants those little irate budgies to Rio De Janeiro where they are charged with freeing as many of the captive rare species of birds as they possible can. It's a noble pursuit for any avaunt guard avian. The core mechanics that make Angry Birds great are still there while adjusting for the almost criminal lack of pigs. Instead you have monkeys and caged birds to deal with. Angry Birds Rio takes the best of Angry Birds and the film Rio and mushes it into a wonderful amalgamation fit for any home screen.

    Tiny Wings HD

    Andres Illiger

Tiny Wings is a testament to the opportunities of the iOS App Store. One very clever guy programmed one of the most enjoyable endless running games you can download. As an adorable bird with the tiniest of wings, you have to get physics on your side to make it as far as you can before nightfall. Unlike other procedurally generated games, this one only changed daily and allowed you to progress farther and farther with practice. With the update, the Tiny Wings family has grown to provide a little bit of sibling rivalry in the newest levels. Sliding and soaring over the multi-colored hills can induce an almost zen-like calm and ease the frustration from a hectic day. Or you can get frustrated at not beating your last high score. It's your choice, but either way, Tiny Wings is a lot of fun.

    Sonic CD

    Sega

Sonic CD was one of the greatest Sonic games ever and gets a fitting retrofit to the iOS. The already simple controls fit well on the touchscreen and the graphics are up to date with a little dab of the retro, enough to make them nostalgic. Sonic has lasted for a long time and we think his new home should be right here on the iOS. Where else would a hedgehog in the fast lane want to be than in the hands of a passenger in the fast lane on a road trip?

    Osmos

    Hemisphere Games

Sometimes you need to chill out and absorb your surroundings. Osmos is a sort of microbial Katamari game that lets you do just that. There is no frantic running against the clock, no enemies trying to kill you around every corner. Osmos is a simple game where you play as a little sphere just looking to get bigger by absorbing anything smaller than it. You can explore each level with relaxed abandon as you look for power ups and other "motes" to absorb. Osmos even has a multiplayer function where you can see which of your friends can absorb the most motes. Even though Osmos seems to be a high concept game, that doesn't mean it is devoid of any fun. It is just a more calm alternative to the fast and furious shooting games dominating the App Store.

    Infinity Blade

    Epic Games

Infinity Blade was the first game that ever made us look at our phones in absolute awe. The graphical fidelity that it achieved as well as the tight and concise gameplay made Infinity Blade a must have. This hack and slasher was much more than a violent way to pass the time in line at the grocery store. In fact, it is more of a commentary on gaming itself and the infinite nature of chasing that high score. As you play through the bloodlines only to die again and again, you start to see the futility of your repetitive actions until you finally grow strong enough to bring down that bad guy on the throne. Infinity Blade is a classic.

    Fruit Ninja

    Half Brick Studios

The goal in Fruit Ninja is simple -- slice up as much fruit as you can. That is it. A simple game can go so far on the iOS as long as its concept is sound. Fruit Ninja is a game that remains fun no matter how much you play it. Maybe it is the satisfying squelch when you separate the two halts of a watermelon. It might be the frustration you feel after slightly nicking a bomb when you were going for a kiwi. Whatever it may be, you'll spend hours slicing and dicing fruit with your finger and you won't regret a minute of it.

Everything you thought you knew about physics puzzles just got turned upside down. On your quest for that blue glowing orb, you have to stretch, bulge, and swing your way across levels and black holes. Contre Jour has everything a good physics puzzler should have and then some. Tiny Tower

    Nimblebit

Farming games are addictive, but they all feel a bit too similar. The creators of Tiny Tower built their game outside of the box and allowed you to build up instead of out. You can create a whole living and breathing community within the walls of your tiny little tower. You can watch the little 8-bit people go about their day as you strive for that extra floor or room to make your tower that much better. Tiny Tower is addictive like all other farming games, but it is well worth your time because of the delightful graphics and the fact that it puts a new spin on a tired and old idea.
