After a decade away from the main franchise, Atlus' Shin Megami Tensei 4 will bring the series back to its roots on the Nintendo 3DS this summer.

Though there have been more than a few different games bearing the Shin Megami Tensei brand over the last ten years, SMT4 is the first real successor to the PlayStation 2 classic, SMT: Nocturne. Players will take the role of a samurai in the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, where they'll have to defend the kingdom against a seemingly endless onslaught of demons.

Following suit with the rest of the SMT lineage, there will be over 400 demons to collect and fuse. SMT4 will also include branching story paths, which will change the course of the story and how NPCs react. There's also a new Press Turn combat system in play, where pressing the advantage can yield big results, or end in disaster. Atlus has even worked in Street Pass functionality, and the game will feature voiced dialogue as well.

There's no exact date yet, but when Shin Megami Tensei 4 arrives, it will retail for $49.99. While we wait for more information, you can enjoy the first batch of screenshots below.
