Set to take place April 5th-7th, the Call of Duty Championship presented by Xbox is the latest effort to bring the commercially successful shooter into the eSports world.

The event will be a 32-team tournament in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, taking place in Hollywood, CA, with a total purse of $1 million. Activision has seemingly spared no expense in bringing Xbox, Major League Gaming, and the Electronic Sports League together for the first of what could be many such events.

"More people play Call of Duty multiplayer every day than watch the average regular season game of the NBA. The scale and passion of the Call of Duty fan base is simply humbling, and yet there is no formal way to find out who amongst those millions of players is the best of the best, until now," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

Players hoping to gain entry into the tournament can register at Call of Duty Elite's eSports hub, and can earn their team a set in the April tournament by participating in the February League Play season, which opened on Friday. The top eight teams will earn guaranteed seats, with other openings going to winners from the MLG 2013 Pro Circuit, and other international tournaments.
